“Picture perfect sexiness now feels boring” – An assertion of wonderful significance I just had to jot down from British Vogue and share with you as they welcome The New SASS! “…A modern word for opinionated sexiness” and I am obsessed! Sass is in and so are grungy florals paired with a polished VB boot – take your sass to the streets and feel yourself gals, because just like that, it is Autumn again and I find myself eagerly flicking through September Vogue to gleefully absorb this year’s trends, brands to watch, IT girls and newly launched beauty products I just have to try.
As Fashion month has come to a close I am back again to divulge the takeaways from this year’s September Issue and reveal the must read articles, latest investment pieces and the unsubtle building blocks you need for your autumn wardrobe. As a fashion aficionada, I find the September Issue a collection of intoxicating and complex style, full of expression and #chicvibesonly and as it happens, last years’ article is probably my favourite post to reread.
Flicking through the glossy pages of my many September issues, I spotted many emerging trends, but let’s kick things off with the colours of the season. From Prada to Bottega, Vuitton and Bulgari – jewel tones are everywhere this Autumn with shades of burgundy, rich green (both army and racing), red and sapphire blue; think prime colours with a radiant twist.
What should be keeping you warm this winter you may ask? Well, it seems fashion is going practical with gloves, shown by Chanel and Prada. As always, chunky knits are in and Tommy Hilfiger and Miu Miu are paving the way for oversized comfort! Knitwear is everywhere, from Missoni stripes to shades of blush nude and beige shown by Chloe and Chanel. Colourful silk neck scarves have been shown by Dolce and Gabbana and Longchamp, whilst the coat of the moment seems to be a boxy shearling flight jacket presented by Kate Spade, Acne, and Altuzarra. Coincidently, I have already seen this trend filter straight into the high-street so fear not, you too can get your shearling fashion fix! However, you can never go wrong with a Burberry trench… my personal favourite being the mid-length Kensington in Honey.
Investment and timeless pieces will always be the grounding to every season – you know, great cashmeres, trench coat, boots etc. however, this year is not just about investing into your wardrobe, but investing into fashion, and by that I mean the outrageous runway inspired pieces and opulent prints. Basically, more is more right now and I for one am loving it, because this means I can buy the metallic Gucci Marmont loafers I have been wanting for a year and a day and totally not feel bad about it!! #YASSS.
While Vuitton and MaxMara are showing alike colour schemes of blues and greens, Valentino has taken a leap in the direction of Chloe with ethereal nude tones and a defined romantic theme. For those chilly days, reach for an Acne Canada scarf and many a layer from Joseph, who are your go-to this season. Find knits both chunky and fine along with the coat you’ve always wanted. With their use of cashmere, wool and that perfect shade of camel, Joseph is the destination for those essential basics that will forever frame your autumnal wardrobe. From tangerine to burgundy, Joseph has what you’re looking for and moreover, think understated luxury – what more could you want? Well, now you mention it… let’s talk Gucci.
Gucci are blowing my mind this year with jewelled colours, sequins and cat printed bags! From pearl studded accessories to gold Versailles inspired loafers, Gucci is on everyone’s wish list and here’s why… According to Elle magazine, when it comes to your accessories this season, the louder the better! Unsubtle is what you should be thinking when shopping for new seasonal pieces, so whilst you’re busy investing in timeless Joseph staples, take a moment to buy your dream pair of Jimmy Choo velvet pumps or even a chic Christian Dior leopard print coat.
Personally, my favourite part of each September Issue is the Editors Letter. I find myself truly inspired when I absorb everything they have to say, from Robbie Myers to Jo Elvin and Anna Wintour, I love reading how this year’s issue came about and in Elle, Robbie Myers went into depth about the idea that ‘fashion is transformative and can be and should be stirring, sexy, inspiring, emotional and sublime.’ And that, my dear friend and reader is exactly how you should feel when you’re making your fashion choices this season, and every season for that matter. From an Emporio Armani metallic bucket bag to an embellished Burberry cross body, there is plenty to choose from when picking out your adorned arm candy.
When I ask my friends who their favourite fashion campaign is from, most agree on Dolce and Gabbana. Partly due to its lack of celebrity but mostly due to its opulence, creativity and passion. When I look at the Dolce runway, I see statement pieces, demanding and passionate embroidery and Italia. Dolce and Gabbana have such a strong identity and sense of being that not many can contest. Their features throughout the September Issue really do embody the upcoming season with jewel tones, waist belts, patterned dresses and the Mary-Jane pump, which survived its comeback last Fall and has returned fighting with even more bejewelled offerings from both Manolo Blahnik and Valentino.
The battle of structured androgyny and relaxed oversized femininity continues with tailoring – something that will never go out of style and something that I vividly recall writing about last year. There is no getting away from it ladies, tailor those damn trousers and go find yourself a pinstripe, velvet or perhaps Balmain blazer and feel those #GirlBoss vibes!
It would seem that this season you’re only as stylish as your neck is adorned and did I mention that a choker, both velvet or silk will emphasize your jawline? Patterned, bright and lacy sheer tights are everywhere so pair them with your best velvet shoes and a metallic Bulgari Serpenti bag. Finish of your outfit with a rough and ready hairdo and a Tom Ford bold lip. This year is about change, from our economy to our fashion, change is coming so embrace it and buy those Stella McCartney swan embroidered jeans because, why the hell not?
Now, it’s one thing to tell you what’s trending and what you should consider when making your autumnal fashion choices, however, it’s a whole new challenge when considering where to shop for it. Net-A-Porter will always be an incredible online destination when it comes to luxury fashion, they have it all and more, along with same day delivery within London which is positively wonderful, or rather it would be if that’s where EKD was situated…
However, the destination one should be flocking to is Selfridges, the greatest department store in the world, just let Vogue tell you. The best article I have read this year out of all 7 of my September Issues is on page 165 of British Vogue, “Service with a STYLE.” This article goes into depth about the Selfridges personal shopping service in their Oxford Street store and continues on to detail all about Selfridges, luxury fashion commerce, personal shopping and Matches Fashion, another exceptional luxury online retailer. I learnt so much and found it so interesting that I actually went back to read it a second time… Did you know that the personal shopping division at Selfridges contributes 25% to the designer womenswear business? Or that 77 is the record number of pieces sold in one matchesfashion.com appointment? Vogue is where the information is at ladies!
I really didn’t want this post to mirror last years, it’s definitely taken me longer than I expected to put this together however, I didn’t want to simply regurgitate Vogue or Harpers, but excite, stimulate and provoke your fashion choices when you’re busy adding every pair of Roger Vivier’s to your Luisaviaroma basket… oh wait, that was me.
Wake up like this and think sheer, tailoring, velvet and sass. Need I remind you… #chicvibesonly.
