Last week, I went to NARS to pick up a Radiant Creamy Concealer, a much-needed product in my handbag makeup pochette. In addition to this welcomed coverage, I also met Benoit Dumont, an international makeup artist and NARS Stylist.
From Paris to London to New York fashion week, Benoit has done it all, with over thirteen years experience, the amount I learnt in the afternoon I had with him was phenomenal. I didn’t want my limited time with Benoit to be wasted and so I asked the pro all my burning questions!
Benoit has worked with the likes of Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang, so I knew I was in terribly good hands. For my makeup, we went with a trend I am loving right now, the grunge smokey eye and naked lip.
Nude lip pick?
To my surprise, Benoit loves the Kardashian nude lip joystick … I’ve never tried it however it will be ordered this week!
Benoit and I both agree that the skin is essential. Prepping your complexion is key and something Benoit is very particular about. He used the NARSskin Multi Action Toner, Luminous Moisturising Cream, Total Replenishing Eye Cream and the Optimal Brightening Concentrate. I found my skin looked healthy, dewy, radiant and perfectly prepped!
Benoit went in with the Radiance Makeup Primer and Sheer Glow Foundation in Mont Blanc, I did a review about this here if you want to know more! He used his hands to apply the makeup and I have to say, my skin has never looked so flawless.
Favourite Makeup Brand?!
Nars, (obviously!) and Mac. Both creative colour brands.
Benoit’s passion for makeup and individually was so strong and contagious, making the consultation all about me and my needs ensured an incredible makeup. We wanted a flawless and dewy look which meant Sheer Glow was a perfect choice and using your hands to apply the liquid foundation meant for an even finish, setting with the Light Reflecting Loose Powder.
For my eyes, we chatted about the look I wanted to achieve. The blackened grunge eye is something I am obsessed with right now and so he shot off to show me some colour combinations. I went for a matte black and brown dirty duo. He began with the eyeshadow primer and then the Soft Touch Pencil in Empire all over the lid, blending with Surabaya and Alhambra for that smudged look. Benoit lined my eyes with Via Veneto and used the Volumizing mascara.
Brush/Sponge/Fingers – How should I apply my foundation?!
Benoit and I discussed this at length, everyone is different and there is no one way to do anything, rigid makeup rules aren’t always right but for a liquid foundation, Benoit likes to use fingers. After he applied mine, I am sold! A sponge, like the Beauty Blender is great when layering, so you don’t lose any coverage and a brush is ideal when using a stick or cream foundation. Try them out and go with whatever works best for you!
We also discussed the art of the eyebrow, both agreeing that the Anastasia Brow Wiz is incredible! Benoit used the Nars Eyebrow pencil in Kalamata, going for a defined yet understated look since the eyes were so strong. Brows are another personal feature and something that takes time to perfect, we’ve all been there when the harsh dark brow roamed our forehead!
Who has amazing makeup game?
Benoit loves Gwen Stefani, because she has that classic look.
Benoit used the Radiant Creamy Concealer in Vanilla, which is a very natural colour for my skin tone and one that now lies in my handbag ready for a mid-day touch up! He is also a fan of the Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer, woo!!! Finally someone who understands my appreciation for this amazing multi-use product! Benoit has this product in his kit and always reaches for it backstage. I love being able to discuss makeup with an artist such as Benoit, the expertise he was able to share was wonderfully overwhelming!
Favourite Nars product?
We went through so many, but one product I also loved as well, was the Multiple in Copacabana. The Multiple has been copied and re-created by many brands but nowhere does this multi-use cream stick like Nars. Copacabana is a shimmery pearl highlight which Benoit used before foundation on the high points of the face, to add a natural and subtle glow from within.
Doing lips before contour allows you to see how defined your cheeks need to be. We wanted a naked lip, enhancing my natural lip so we swatched some colour combinations and I chose the more lavender undertone nude, the Bettina Velvet Matte crayon with Tasmania lipgloss. This duo looked polished yet natural and really complemented the look.
Lastly, we have contour & blush. Benoit went for a subtle contour, which I adored, he used Madly and Casis lightly on the cheeks for a flush of colour, creating an effortlessly defined shadow.
This is something I like to ask artists, they use so many that their opinion is an informed one, and to my surprise, Benoit loves a good drugstore mascara! Hello there Maybelline False Lash Effect. Really inexpensive and super accessible!
The best eyelash curlers?
Benoit used to work for Shu Uemura and of course, they have the greatest eyelash curlers in the world. One definitely on my wishlist this christmas!
I had an incredible time spending my afternoon at NARS. Benoit is an exceptional makeup artist, the greatest I have worked with. He loves what he does, I mean, really loves it and that showed through immensely. His radiating appreciation for makeup, individuality, beauty and style has made him the international success that he is today, along with being my new favourite person!
Thank you for a fabulous afternoon Benoit, it was a true pleasure.
See you soon!
